Impact of Environmental Event on Property Values

Clarion Associates was retained by attorneys representing Exxon Shipping in litigation arising out of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989. Clarion’s role was to analyze the impact of the spill on the real estate market in south-central Alaska and Kodiak Island, and to analyze the resulting damages.

Scope of Services Provided

  • Conducted extensive research on the Alaska real estate market as well as comparative case studies of real estate impacts in other oil spill events throughout North America;
  • Determined the impact of the spill and cleanup on market values of more than 850,000 acres of land in private ownership extending from Valdez on the northeast to Kodiak Island on the southwest;
  • Members of the firm were testifying experts in the Alaska state court trial to determine real estate damages.
